Useful tips for healthy hair exist, and you can follow them to avoid common summer hair problems.
Read the scientific article below on how to protect your hair during the summer.
Sun
The UV rays that damage your skin also cause similar damage to your hair if the proper protection is not used. The sun breaks down the bonds that make the keratin in your hair strong, leading to weak hair and fading of color.
To prevent sun damage to your hair, it helps to wear a hat and use a hair sunscreen, which should be reapplied frequently.
Sea
The water content in your hair is what makes it look elastic and hydrated. If your hair loses moisture and it is not replenished, it will become dry and dehydrated.
Sea water contains a high amount of salt, which removes moisture from the hair, causing the strands to become rough and dull. You may notice brittle ends and tangled hair that is hard to comb.
Avoid frequent sea swims, rinse your hair thoroughly after exposure to sea water, and use a leave-in conditioner to hydrate your hair.
Swimming Pool
A short exposure to chlorinated water will not harm your hair, but it will dry it out for at least a day. Prolonged exposure to pool water can damage or change the color of your hair, especially if it is very light.
The scalp produces oils to protect and hydrate hair from daily damage. However, pool chlorine removes these oils, causing dryness of the scalp, increased porosity, brittle hair, and in some cases significant damage. Additionally, oxidized metals (such as copper) in pool water bind to the hair protein, leaving a green tint on the hair.
There are simple ways to prevent the damaging effects of pool water on your hair. Before swimming, wet your hair with fresh water or apply a leave-in conditioner. This makes it harder for chlorine to bind to your hair.
Wear a swim cap, rinse your hair immediately after swimming, and use special shampoos and masks to hydrate your hair and repair damage.
Washing
There has been much debate about how often to wash hair during the summer. Many experts say frequent washing strips the natural oils produced by the scalp, resulting in dry and dull hair. On the other hand, chlorine, salt, and sunscreen damage hair and should be rinsed off to minimize exposure time.
It is preferable to keep your hair clean, so use a shampoo with a low pH suitable for frequent use. Additionally, conditioner partially replaces the natural oils removed by washing.
